Ese Brume Wins Nigeria’s First Medal At Tokyo Olympics: It’s Bronze.

Nigeria finally got its first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after Ese Brume bagged a bronze medal in the women’s long jump event in the early hours of Tuesday August 3.

Brume leapt a distance of  6.97 metres with her very first jump behind 2nd placed Brittany Reece of the United States of America and eventual winner Malaika Mihambo of Germany.

This is Nigeria’s first medal haul in the field of athletics at the Olympic Games in 13 years.

Brume, who is the current record holder from Africa in the women’s Long Jump, had qualified for the final stage on Sunday with a jump of 6.76m, 1cm more than the required mark. She finished 4th best overall to earn her place among the finalists before going into Tuesday’s final to win Nigeria’s first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

She joins the likes of Blessing Okagbare and Glory Alozie as the only Nigerians to win individual medals at both the World Athletics meet and the Olympics .
